DANCE REPORT NSD 2026 CONVENTION
We offer sincere congratulations to our friends at Fresno Smooth Dancers for hosting a memorable 2026 National Smooth Dancers Convention. An enthusiastic vibe dominated the ballroom as NSD members embraced the theme “Around the World in Four Days” – Mexico, England, Africa, Argentina, India and Yosemite. The theme did require some careful wardrobe planning. A common refrain? “I’ve never brought so many outfits to convention!”
On the first evening, the Visalia Sky Dancers performed a medley of Bachata, Nightclub 2-step, Rumba, and Salsa to the tune of “Up Up and Away.” VSD’s formation team was composed of Lew and Florence, Greg and Barbara, Dean and Cheryl, Stan and Kristine, David and Carol, Ahmed and Michelle, Laura, Sally and Kelly. They walked onto the dance floor carrying lots of balloons!
Visalia also provided the evening’s post-dance hospitality. A total of 38 VSD members attended the convention.
The following night, Fresno Queen Oralia Fowler had the honor of being installed as NSD State Queen. Two boys from her entourage danced for her and the crowd: one did Michael Jackson-style dance moves, and another did a tap dance.
As always, formal night was breathtaking with everyone adorned in gowns and formal wear and dancing the night away. An out-of-town couple stumbled across us and were captivated by the sight of it all.
Professional dancers Anna Trebunskaya and Artemi Okunev performed on both Saturday night and Sunday evening. They’re no strangers to Visalia having performed at Queen Laura’s first coronation.
Several dance hosts were available and were well-utilized, and it is notable that the roster included something new: A female dance host.
In addition to general dancing, there was competition, performances and dance instruction (Foxtrot, Waltz, Rumba, Argentine Tango), which kept everyone involved and entertained. We all enjoyed hours of non-stop dancing, for which we are grateful even if it made our feet hurt.

3rd Place Three Star American Rhythm
Greg and Barbara Uichanco - 3rd Place Two Star Int’l Standard
Michelle Peters and Ahmed Bahar - 3rd place One Star American Smooth
John Guttierrez and Margaret Moholt - 2nd place Senior Cha Cha
Additionally, Michelle took 2nd place in Jack and Jill West Coast Swing.
We would like to acknowledge John and Linda Guttierrez for serving as “Scrutineers.” In dance competition, a Scrutineer is responsible for collecting, compiling, and calculating the judges’ scorecards for final results. It’s a responsibility that requires the utmost discretion and attention to detail. Thank you, John and Linda.
Greg Uichanco honored our partnership with Fresno by volunteering to assist with music duties.
Finally, San Fernando Valley Smooth Dancers performed a preview — some of it in Elizabethan English — for next year’s convention. The theme will be “When the Lights go Out.” The activity card calls for a pajama party, favorite actor dress up, and “finding out what happens to Willie and the Witches!”
Until next year, keep on dancin’.
